What is involved in a Pelvic Health Assessment?

An overview of our assessments & treatments…

Diagnostic Ultrasound

We use a trans-abdominal ultrasound to give you live feedback as to how your pelvic floor is performing. The ultrasound can show the lift and relax of the pelvic floor. Diagnostic ultrasound is available to all of our clients. This can be used on all genders.

Bladder / Bowel Diary

We may ask you to complete a bladder or bowel diary, or maybe both, depending on your symptoms, to give us an accurate representation of your bladder and bowel function over 72 hours. We use this to tailor your bladder and bowel training program.

Internal Examination

If appropriate, and with informed consent, we can perform an internal examination on females to accurately assess the function of the pelvic floor, check for prolapses and ensure the pelvic bowel is functioning well. The exam is very comfortable and very useful to provide a diagnosis.

Musculoskeletal Assessment

As our Pelvic Health Physiotherapists have spent years as musculoskeletal physiotherapists, they are equipped at providing an overall assessment to ensure that nothing is missed. Quite often it isn’t just pelvic floor dysfunction that causes pelvic issues. The lower back, posture, foot position, hip position and abdominal control can play a very important role in recovery.

Exercise Programs

Depending on the deficiencies you physiotherapist identifies, they can provide an exercise program tailored to your specific needs. This can include, but not limited to, pelvic floor exercises, abdominal exercises, and back and hip exercises. This could be strength work or relaxation, depending on your needs.

Bladder retraining

For those diagnosed with an overactive bladder, we provide a very specific and personalised bladder training program to improve your symptoms. These programs are done independently at home, and we will review you at a certain interval to adjust the program as required throughout your recovery.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

We provide therapeutic ultrasound to the breast tissue which is excellent at relieving mastitis and blocked milk ducts in breast feeding / post breastfeeding mothers.

Pessary Fitting

Pessaries are used to support women with a vaginal prolapse. These can be self-managed, meaning you can remove them at your leisure. A well-fitted pessary eliminates symptoms without any feeling of a pessary being there!

We start off with a detailed discussion about what has brought you in to see us. We take a very thorough history to ensure we have all of the information. There is usually lots of discussion happening in the first consultation. We then do a physical assessment and collate all of the information to provide you with an accurate diagnosis. We then tailor a treatment plan designed specifically to suit your needs and assist your recovery in the best possible way.

Book an appointment.

We have appointments available online to book. However, we also have additional appointments available if none of those suit. So please call the clinic if the times listed do not work for you.

WHAT TO BOOK?

Your first consultation with our pelvic physiotherapists will be an hour in duration if it is for a pelvic floor appointment. We recommend also booking a follow-up consultation (30 mins) two weeks after your first consult to ensure you have a spot reserved as our physiotherapists book out in advance. If we decide it is not needed or needs to be moved, that can easily be done after your first consult. It’s better to have a spot to ensure guaranteed continued care.

If you are unsure what type of appointment you need, don’t hesitate to call the clinic during our business hours.
